Treatment for Cluster Headache
Anticonvulsants like topiramate and valproate modulate neuronal excitability by enhancing GABA-mediated inhibition and reducing glutamate-mediated excitation, thereby stabilizing neuronal membranes and suppressing abnormal neuronal firing associated with cluster headache pathogenesis. These medications reduce neurogenic inflammation, decrease neuronal hyperexcitability, and modify pain signal transmission in the trigeminal system, ultimately decreasing the frequency and intensity of cluster headache episodes.

Lithium worked temporarily for me. After I tried lamotrigine, which has worked for the last 7 years (presumably)

I have both also. Lamotrigine got rid of CH and I was chronic for years. Had to switch to lithium temporarily and that worked too. Now I'm on depakote. I did get a brief relapse in CH a couple weeks ago but then when I did blood work to check depakot...View more

I was at point where I couldn't get much lower.Yes I saw quick results with lamotrigine. Depression was still there a bit but headaches were gone. My Dr switched from lithium because the depression was still prevalent and lithium is an older drug.

Just read a post by someone who seems to have gotten his CH under control with Lamotrigine. So definitely worth discussing with your doctor as you may be able to kill two birds with one stone.
