Treatment for Cluster Headache

Triptans, such as sumatriptan, are selective serotonin receptor (5-HT1B/1D) agonists that work by causing vasoconstriction and inhibiting neurogenic inflammation in cranial blood vessels. These medications rapidly reduce pain by binding to receptors in the trigeminal system, decreasing neuropeptide release and interrupting the inflammatory cascade associated with cluster headaches.
