Treatment for Cluster Headache
Inhaled oxygen at high flow rates (7-15 L/min) acts rapidly to abort cluster headache attacks by causing vasoconstriction and reducing neurogenic inflammation through activation of the trigeminovascular system's sympathetic pathways. The mechanism involves stimulation of cerebral arterial smooth muscle contraction and reduction of inflammatory neuropeptide release, which helps mitigate the intense, unilateral pain characteristic of cluster headaches.
