opioids
Treatment for Cluster Headache
Opioids, such as sumatriptan or high-dose morphine, act on mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system to modulate pain perception and provide analgesic effects for cluster headaches. By binding to these receptors, opioids inhibit the release of neurotransmitters involved in pain signaling and can potentially interrupt the neurogenic inflammation associated with cluster headache pathophysiology.
