Treatment for Cluster Headache
Triptans, such as sumatriptan, act as selective serotonin receptor (5-HT1B/1D) agonists that cause vasoconstriction and inhibit neuropeptide release in cerebral blood vessels, effectively interrupting the neurogenic inflammation associated with cluster headaches. Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, is used prophylactically to stabilize neuronal membranes and reduce the frequency and intensity of cluster headache episodes by modulating calcium-dependent neuronal excitability.
