rescue medications
Treatment for Cluster Headache
Oxygen inhalation at high flow rates (12-15 L/min) and sumatriptan (subcutaneous or nasal spray) are primary rescue medications for acute cluster headache, acting rapidly to constrict cranial blood vessels and interrupt the trigeminal-vascular pain pathway. These treatments work by causing vasoconstriction, reducing neurogenic inflammation, and providing quick symptomatic relief during a cluster headache attack.
