Treatment for Cluster Headache

Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, is used in cluster headache prophylaxis by modulating neuronal calcium influx and stabilizing neuronal membranes. It reduces neurogenic inflammation and sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, thereby decreasing the frequency and intensity of cluster headache episodes. Its mechanism involves blocking L-type calcium channels in cerebral vasculature and modulating neurotransmitter release, which helps prevent headache onset.
