Treatment for Cluster Headache
Oxygen therapy and high-flow supplemental oxygen (typically at 12-15 L/min via non-rebreather mask) acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing cerebral blood flow and alleviating the intense, rapid-onset pain characteristic of cluster headaches. The rapid inhalation of 100% oxygen causes arterial vasoconstriction and reduces intracranial blood flow, which helps to quickly abort acute cluster headache episodes by modulating vascular tone and neurogenic inflammation.
