Treatment for Cluster Headache
Topiramate, an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer, is used prophylactically in cluster headache treatment by modulating voltage-gated sodium channels and inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, which reduces neuronal excitability and decreases inflammatory pain signaling. Its mechanism of action involves stabilizing neuronal membranes and potentially reducing trigeminovascular activation, thereby decreasing the frequency and severity of cluster headache episodes.
